BIOGRAPHY
The Oakland Faders got their start in the East Bay, Northern California in the mid-nineties. Hip-Hop was very different back then. Some say scratching was at its funkiest. Two copies of the same 12″ were essential. Q-Bert was every deejays hero, novice or professional. Copyright laws hadn’t quite kicked in so hard and searching for beats was still reserved for the truly dedicated. This was 10 years ago, and DJ Spair, with his trusty side-kick DJ Platurn, werre jut getting started.
It’s 2007, and yet the Faders haven’t changed that much. They still take record collecting very seriously and always prefer rockin’ doubles of the newest/hottest instrumental. I guess the main difference would have to be that their skills are now top notch, their cuts have gotten way funkier and their music collections have turned into full-fledged music libraries, despite the fact that the search for that holy funky beat is now “a thing of the past” in this digital driven world. Plus they love it even more thatn when they first started.
They have shared a bill with everyone from M.F. Doom to Maseo to Melvin Sparks (do your math), from Madlib to Mix Master Mike to Marvin Holmes (do your homework), not to mention a whole lot of other non M’s in between. They’ve released a smorgasbord of music, including a 7 inch, an EP, some 12 inches and a slew of mixtapes and CD’s. They’ve appeared on and contributed to multiple local and national CD, vinyl and DVD releases and earned various titles and awards for their heralded DJ work (including both Mixwell/URB Magazines, East Bay Express, Redbull, Pepsi, and Scion related mix contests). They have also played in some very unique places all over the world, including all over the United States, South Africa, Scandinavia, Canada and practically every single musical establishment in the center of the world.
We’re speaking of Northern California of course. The Bay Area to be exact. This year is set to be the biggest for the Oakland based collective, which boasts honorary member DJ’s Mere, the legendary Joe Quixx, their new member Karamel, and a slew of related artists dedicatted to keeping the funk alive.
